The Grand Seiko SBGY023 GS9Club exclusive was a limited release of 299 pieces that sold out within days ofits release. The sparkling dial has asurprising depth, made possible via a pattern known as kirazuri, the fineprintmaking paper technique where the natural fibers shine through to create adegree of roughness in the surface – made most famous in woodblock prints ofthe Matsumoto Castle. Here, these rough patches create spectacular dazzlinghighlights that can go from silver to stone to almost brown. Its beautifullyoffset by a blued seconds hand with the characteristic ultra-smooth sweep ofthe spring drive, and uncluttered due to a lack of other dial complications.The Spring Drive was anengineering marvel when it was invented 20 years ago, and the 9R31 version herehonors that tradition. Tucked behind an exhibition back, the main barrel (72hour reserve) and blued screws are on full display, along with an integratedpower reserve meter. Mounted on a gray alligator leather strap with signeddeployant clasp, its an elegant package indeed! Ships double boxed, with manualand warranty card (dated from December 2022).
